It’s shoulder season! Enjoy RV rentals at 95% off!

Shoulder season is here again! September and October typically offer great deals on travel since the kids are back in school, summer vacation is over, and the weather is changing. Hotels, airlines, rental companies, and cruise lines face a drop in business and try to attract travelers by offering amazing deals. Last spring, I posted in greater detail about how to find deals on RV rentals and cruises. Read the full post here.

Here are a couple amazing deals for fall 2012

Cruise America is offering 95% off a one-way RV rental between Las Vegas, NV and Jacksonville, FL.

Royal Caribbean is offering a 14-night cruise from Barcelona, Spain to Miami, FL for only $653.

Would you like a free drink with that airline ticket?

These days, airlines seem to nickel-and-dime us for everything. Many carriers are now charging for checked luggage and most don’t serve free meals anymore. In fact, my husband and I took a seven-hour flight to Hawai’i for our honeymoon without being offered a bag of peanuts or pretzels. We could, however, purchase the on-board snack box full of junk food for $5.

On the other side of the spectrum, we happened to be flying on Halloween last year and were given a free cocktail! What a nice surprise! I recently came across an article from the Huffington Post by Khadeeja Safdar detailing ten different airlines that offer free drinks. Check it out here. It’s great to get a freebie every now and then!

European backpacking on the cheap: $14 airline tickets

Many people share a dream of backpacking through Europe. While this vision is truly romantic and steeped in history, it can be very time consuming. One way to save time would be forgoing the traditional backpacking methods of transportation (foot, rail, car) and opting for air travel. Some of Europe’s budget airlines offer a cheap way to fly from city to city (as low as $14 one-way).

Gabrielle Zunde published tips on finding low-cost flights in Budget Travel. Read her article here.

The Vagabonds inspire train travel

I recently came across this great post by another WordPress blogger, The Vagabonds. They shared their love of a train travel-based board game called “Ticket to Ride” in which players build cross-country travel itineraries by connecting destinations through the trading and matching of cards.

Why am I writing about a board game? Because the first step in traveling is planning – fantasizing, dreaming, and scheming about how to arrive at your destination. I always say that if you can dream up a trip, you can make it happen. Pick up this game! I promise you’ll be inspired to begin planning a cross-country train trip, just like The Vagabonds.

Score free upgrades on airline seats, rental cars, hotel rooms

Here’s a great video clip from the TODAY show. Budget Travel‘s Marc Peyser visited the studio to share his tips on scoring free upgrades on airline seats, rental cars, and hotel rooms.

What’s the bottom line? Being friendly and considerate goes a long way!

We scored a free upgrade on a rental car by arriving late - all of the tiny compact cars were rented so we were told to choose whatever we wanted from the entire lot. We chose a Jeep, which was perfect for exploring the Everglades!

Shoulder season: low-cost RV rentals, re-positioning cruises abound

We’re approaching a magical time of year for savvy travelers – shoulder season. Typically, the months of April to May and September to October signify slow business in the tourism industry. These months fall in-between major travel events for most people – spring break, summer vacation, and the holidays. Because there are fewer travelers, great discounts abound. In this post, I’ll share interesting spins on shoulder season discounts, thanks to Budget Travel.*

RV rentals

During shoulder season, RV rental companies need to move their fleet to meet demand for the upcoming months. These companies rely on customers to move their rigs for them. Cruise America (one of the largest RV rental companies) says “From time to time Cruise America needs to reposition RV’s from one area of the country to another. By taking advantage of one of our one-way specials you can get great deals on Time & Mileage charges while avoiding the usual one-way drop off fees.” They are currently offering a 50% discount on RV rentals from Chicago to Las Vegas between May 15 and June 5, 2012.

Check their website for a list of one-way specials: http://www.cruiseamerica.com/rent/hot_deals/

Re-positioning cruises

You’ve heard of Caribbean cruises and Mediterranean cruises…but what about a cross-Atlantic re-positioning cruise? This spring, many cruise companies will be moving their ships from U.S. ports to Mediterranean ports for the summer. Instead of piloting an empty ship across the ocean, they’ll take passengers along for the ride- at a discounted rate. For example, Norwegian Cruiselines  needs to move a ship from New Orleans to Barcelona this April. Join them on the 13-night journey – complete with a stop at Portugal’s Azores Islands – for $672. My friend, Marti, is a fan of re-positioning cruises. She took a trans-Atlantic cruise from Galveston, TX to Barcelona last spring.
